Costa Blanca - February 23rd-March 15th 2003

The SW Face of the Puig Campana

Sunday 23rd: Cath, Neil D. and I met up with Marianna and Neil W. at Alicante airport and headed off to Sella.

The approach ridge of Espolon Centrale

Monday 24th: It was a bit drizzly so we all went down the Sella valley and did a few easy routes to wake up the climbing muscles!

The first sustained pitch of Espolon Centrale

Tuesday 25th: The weather still wasn't encouraging so we went to Toix West but after only a couple of routes it rained on us...

Cath at the top of Espolon Centrale

Wednesday 26th: At last a nice day so we all headed off early to do 'Espolon Centrale' on Puig Campana and got back to the car at 9pm in daylight, (just!). Then we had a nice meal at the Moli II bar in Finistrat.

Neil on the epic abseil of Magical Mystery Tour

Thursday 27th: The weather changed again, very windy with some rain. The others walked from the Finistrat side of the "Sharks Teeth" ridge back to the Sella climbing area while I went off to Alicante airport to pick up John.

Neil D. & Cath at the top of the Valencianos Slab

Friday 28th: At last the weather improved so we went to the Penon d'Ifach and two teams did the classic route Valencianos whilst Neil W. and I did Polvos Magicos and Diedro UBSA, everyone meeting up at the top.

The two Neils on pitch 1 of Magical Mystery Tour

Saturday 1st March: The two Neils did Magical Mystery Tour while I took pictures of them. We then joined the others for a route on Toix West before the wind came in and it suddenly got cold.

On 'Marion' in the Sella Gorge

Sunday 2nd: Climbed Marion with Neil and then took Mariana to the airport, returning to do a couple more routes before Cath and the two Neils headed off.

On the Moraira Cliff

Monday 3rd: The six of us of the week 2 had an extremely hot day at Moraira cliff!

Our first view of Olta Crag

Tuesday 4th: Chris and I headed off to Forada and did 10 routes in blazing hot weather on this quite nice but distant crag. Long drive and then a long way along an unmade track to reach the cliff.
The others went to Puig Campana to do Espolon Centrale.

A strange view of the Penon d'Ifach from Olta

Wednesday 5th: We headed off to Olta on a seemingly overcast day... until we reached the crag when the cloud did strange things and left us baking in the heat!

The abseil pitch of Dierdro UBSA on the Penon

Thursday 6th: Richard and I went up Diedro UBSA on the Penon, followed by Chris & Chris!

Sax (aka Cabreras)

Friday 7th: The six of us went to Sax where Richard and I struggled to do four 2-pitch routes.

A splendid view of the Puig de Divino in the Sella Valley

Saturday 8th: A 'rest day' for me as I picked up Shirley and Dierdre from the airport, although the three of us did manage to do a route at Sella before it rained...

The left side of the Placa area of Toix West

Sunday 9th: Toix West and five routes with Dierdre.

Deirdre on the Sella ridge path

Monday 10th: The weather not looking too encouraging Deirdre and I got dropped off at the bottom of the Divino approach and scrambled up the descent route to the top. From there we walked along the Sella ridge looking for a way down but finding nothing obvious we resigned ourselves to a long walk along the road back.
- Luckily the others had somehow divined our need and rescued us in the car! (Thanks guys!)

At the top of Espolon Centrale

Tuesday 11th: A nice day and Dierdre and I scampered up Esperon Centrale on Puig Campana in 4 hours, Chris and Shirley following us up, and back to the Moli II in daylight.

Calpe & the Penon d'Ifach on a clear day!

Thursday 13th: After a 'rest day' yesterday for Deirdre & me we had a very hot day on Magical Mystery Tour with Shirley.

Coming around the corner on pitch 1 of Magical Mystery Tour

Friday 14th: The four of us did Valencianos on the Penon, Deirdre and I avoiding the very polished chimney pitch by the 5a alternative.

After the polished pitch 3 of Via Valencianos

Saturday 15th: Sorted ourselves and the cottage out and headed back to LBA via Alicante.
