Saastal & Val 'd'Herens June 26th - July 11th 2008

Lots of snow on the Lagginhorn viewed from the Weissmies hut

Friday 27th June: Having taken the usual 2 days to drive from Yorkshire to Saas Grund (bivvying near Reims) we set up camp on the Kapellenweg campsite. It was very hot and sunny as it was most of our trip except for two x2 day periods close together.

Saturday 28th: On a very hot day day we walked up to the Monte Moro Pass

The Golden Madonna at the Monte Moro Pass

Sunday 29th: Very hot again so we did the two easy climbs in the gorge near the campsite and scrambled up the gorge as far as we could to investigate the via ferrata course. Later we walked up to Saas Fee and saw the initial zip-wire across the valley in action.

Monday 30th: We took the telepherique up to the mid-station and then walked up to the Weissmies hut, still a very hot day but a bit cooler out of the valley bottom.

Tuesday 1st: From the hut we climbed the via ferrata up the Jegihorn and then walked down to the hut and back down to the valley.

Wednesday 2nd: We took our time walking up to the Almageller hut in the heat, took us about 7 hours.

Thursday 3rd & Friday 4th:  Heavy rain thwarted our plans on Thursday and after waiting to see if Friday was any better we returned to the campsite. The forecast was for a few more days of bad weather so we moved on a little earlier than planned to the very nice Evolene campsite in the Val d’Herens.

Saturday 5th: At Evolene we found some hot weather and set up camp and got ourselves sorted out.

Sunday 6th & Monday 7th: Heavy rain for two days... didn’t do a great deal!

Tuesday 8th: At last the sunshine returned but it was baking hot! We drove to Arolla and walked to the Aiguilles Rouges hut, returning via Lac Bleu.

Wednesday 9th: Another very hot day, we did the Evolene via ferrata in the late afternoon as our last foray.

Thursday 10th & Friday 11th: Driving back we bivvied at the  “Aire des Pelerins” just north of Reims, after a brief stop in Chamonix where it was just too hot to do anything!
