Lundy Island (CC) - August 2nd-9th 2008

My ninth trip to Lundy and unusually it was a wet and very windy week, the tides were all wrong and the bird restrictions had been extended…

Saturday 2nd:  Dave & Jo Collier & I met up with the rest of the CC group at Ilfracombe and we landed on Lundy at about 2pm. After dumping our gear in the Barn Dave & I headed off to do the top half of the Devils Slide in damp & windy conditions. The bottom part of the route was being washed by rough seas!

Sunday 3rd:  Dennis May joined us and we headed down to Landing Craft Bay. Trying to find somewhere out of the wind we climbed  Formula One, Indy 500 and Roadrunner. Not liking the look of the darkening clouds we headed back to the Barn and got there just as it rained heavily.

Monday 4th:  Showers and dark skies prompted us to go for a short walk along the East coast halfway path and down to the water at Quarry Beach. Somewhere I’d not explored before.

The weather improved a little so we headed back and the three of us climbed Shamrock. The skies were looking threatening again so we decided to pack it in, however I abseiled down to try to retrieve a dropped wire and got caught in a heavy shower. On a nice tight top rope I climbed Leprechauner and we sped back to the Barn!

Tuesday 5th: Dave & I went to the Battery area but the high tide and big seas made access to the lower pitches dangerous and very wet.

We climbed the top pitch of Diamond Solitaire and then a light shower prompted us to leave. The weather had improved a little by the time we gained the plateau so we headed down to have a look at the Destiny area of Landing Craft Bay. Dave & I had climbed the first pitch of Harbinger when heavy rain forced us to abb off. We escaped up Shamrock in the pouring rain.

Climbing a soaking wet Shamrock with much care!

Wednesday 6th:  It rained heavily all day long and most of us read a book or two… Scott went fishing catching sufficient mackerel for a meal for most of the group. Fun & games ensued later as the usual Barn challenges were attempted!

Thursday 7th:  At last a nice sunny day and most of the group went to the Devils Slide. Dave led the first half of the Devils Slide with Dennis leading us up the second half. We then climbed Shark, Albion and Satan's Slip.

Friday 8th:  Not such a nice start to the day and the three of us went down to Landing Craft Bay again. We climbed Centaur and then Hot Rod. Over to Sunset Promontory to climb Eclipse. The weather was beginning to look doubtful so we called it a day. Back at the Barn Scott had been fishing again so mackerel was on the menu!

Saturday 9th:  We were due to leave the island but the weather was so bad that the boat didn’t sail and we had to stay another night. We read some more books and Jo cooked everyone an excellent chilli meal.

Sunday 10th:  It was still very windy and the boat took 2.5h to make a very rough crossing from Ilfracombe to Lundy. With the wind behind us our passage was better and it only took us 1.75h

Don't forget to turn your sound on!

A good week despite the disappointing weather.
A great crowd of people and between us all a lot of very good routes were climbed.
Thanks everyone!
