Costa Blanca - March 6th-20th 2004

Looking towards Puig Aitana from the summit of Puig Campana

Saturday 6th: Five of us travelled out to meet up with Neil at Alicante airport and then off to Sella in two cars.

Yvonne on Epsolon Centrale

Sunday 7th: On a hot day Neil and I went up Placas Solares on the Divino, managing to stay on route until about pitch 8 and then just forcing a route up to the top!

The Finestrat Pillar of Puig Campana

Monday 8th: Another hot day and we did a route approximating to Epsolon Finistraat/Arete Pepsi on the Puig Campana. Although we climbed some good pitches I'm still not sure we were on route!
We did the first pitch of Diedros Magicos as well before retreating to the Moli II for refreshment.

Tuesday 9th: Another hot day in the Mascarat Gorge doing Via UPSA.

The NW Face of Puig Campana

Wednesday 10th: The weather took a turn for the worse and low heavy cloud threatened rain. We decided to have a walk around Puig Campana and ended up back at the cottage in Sella!
Hitching a ride from the others I picked up the car and then joined them at Sella Gorge for a few quick routes.

Thursday 11th: The day dawned clear and bright so we headed off to the Puig Campana at 7am to attempt the big route. With only a topo as guide we climbed some great pitches but had difficulty finding pitches 4 and 7, and after attempting several likely lines ending in dead ends we found ourselves a third of the way up the route, 7 hours after starting and with only 5 hours of daylight left...
Reassessing the situation we decided to retreat while it was still an option.

Neil & Yvonne as we gear up for Espolon Centrale

Friday 12th: Finally deciding to be sociable we went up Espolon Centrale on the Puig Campana with Yvonne and Steve. Reaching the main descent gully in reasonable time we went to the summit and returned by the much more amenable descent path on the other side of the mountain, reaching the car just as it began to get dark. Another good weather day.

Saturday 13th: The airport run for me, picking up two people and then another trip to take Neil there. (The weather was a bit disappointing and this set the scene for the coming week...)

El Ponoch from the Puig Campana

Sunday 14th: A dull day threatening rain. Deirdre and I had an afternoon at Sella Gorge with her on the sharp end!

Monday 15th: Gale force winds and heavy rain sent us to Calpe to do a little shopping...

Is this Cool or what!  (MMT p2)

Tuesday 16th: A dull day but still we drove to the Marin crag and did four routes.

Happieness is... leading pitch 1 of Magical Mystery Tour!

Wednesday 17th: A better day so we climbed Magical Mystery Tour. Just as we returned to Toix West it began to rain!

MMT pitch 2

Thursday 18th: The weather still being poor we had a rest day around Sella, driving up the back of the Divino and walking up to the summit wreathed in cloud.

Walking to the summit of the Divino

Friday 19th: Starting off dull and cold it brightened up enough for us to visit Toix West where Deirdre led six of the single pitch routes and John (JW) sent me up the hardest route I'd done all week.

Saturday 20th: Jet2 from Alicante to Leeds-Bradford airport.
